Weekly Space News - quick and easy
Massive exoplanet 1/4 the size of its sun discovered
Last week, scientists discovered a massive exoplanet 280 light years away from the earth. The new planet (TOI 5205b) has been nicknamed the “forbidden planet”. The planet orbits a red dwarf star which is only 4 times larger than the planet itself. The new planet which has been discovered is slightly larger than Jupiter.
Early super-massive black hole may provide cosmic insights to scientists
Last week, Scientists working on the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) radio observatory in Chile discovered a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy approximately 13 billion light years away. This could provide insights into galaxy formation and supermassive black holes when the universe was only 750 million years old, which is just 5% of its current age. The observation made by ALMA shows the galaxy’s state 13 billion years ago. The universe is only 13.7 billion years old. The new galaxy is forming stars 1000 times faster than our galaxy.
AI helps find nature of 2,77,00 space objects using X-rays
Researchers at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), India used artificial intelligence to find the nature of 2,77,00 space objects observed in the X-ray wavelengths (0.03 and 3 nanometres). This has led to the discovery of thousands of black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarf stars.
New discovery shows that galaxies grow quicker than previously expected
A new discovery made by the James Webb Space Telescope, of a group of galaxies formed 500 - 700 million years after the big bang has given scientists new insights about galaxy formation. These early galaxies were much bigger than expected. This shows that galaxies grow quicker than what was previously expected.
Russian spacecraft replaces damaged capsule on ISS
Russia has finally replaced the damaged spacecraft aboard the International Space Station which had left 2 cosmonauts and 1 astronaut stranded in the space station for 2 months. The 3 can now return back to the earth safely.
